Goddess of the Ardennes

Deep within the ancient forests of the Ardennes, a goddess was once remembered.

​

Her name was Arduinna.

​

Little is known about her with certainty. Ancient inscriptions and archaeological discoveries suggest that she was a goddess associated with the Ardennes forest, a vast woodland landscape stretching across parts of modern-day Belgium, Luxembourg, France, and Germany. She is traditionally connected with the wild boar, an animal that came to represent her in surviving depictions and later interpretations.

And yet, for a goddess whose name has endured for nearly two thousand years, remarkably little remains of her story.

There are no surviving myths that tell us who she loved, what she feared, or what prayers were whispered beneath the trees in her name.

Perhaps that is what makes Arduinna so fascinating.

​

Rather than claiming to know the goddess, I want to explore the fragments that remain — the history, the forests, the archaeology, the symbolism, and the possibilities hidden between the lines.
